Highlands
Our clients realized that to build a dream home you first need to purchase a suitable site, - and that the simplest method of doing so is to buy an existing dwelling. They found exactly what they wanted in the form of a secluded ramshackle bungalow, complete with asbestos roof, on a glorious site with views extending 20 miles across Dorset.
Our design for its replacement is all about the site. First, the plan describes a reflected and inverted capital ‘L’ which clasps the prime location and directs itself towards the stunning views.
Next it employs extensive south and west facing glazing, shielded from high altitude sun by generous overhanging eaves. This provides the principal living spaces with glorious uninterrupted views over the adjoining countryside.
Completed: 1999
All the first floor accommodation at ‘Highlands’ is built within the roof. We much prefer this to the more conventional method of flat ceilings and an attic. There are various reasons: reduced height and bulk, improved thermal efficiency and the creation of dynamic, exciting spaces.
