The Bothy

Ringwood, Hampshire

This small dwelling renovation in Ringwood, Hampshire, on the edge of the New Forest National Park, demonstrates how thoughtful design can maximize space and functionality in a compact home. The original 51m² Bothy lacked a dining area, a ground floor toilet, and had access through a narrow porch.

DUA Architecture addressed these issues by adding a bay window with an extended roof, creating a spacious dining area and a more welcoming covered entrance. A lean-to extension provided a convenient ground-floor toilet without compromising the dwelling’s scale or character.

Situated within a conservation area, the design was carefully reviewed in collaboration with the local authority’s conservation officer to ensure sensitivity to the historic context. The project highlights that modest interventions can deliver significant architectural and functional improvements, enhancing both comfort and aesthetic appeal.
