The Barton
Devon
This barn conversion in Devon is a stunning example of how thoughtful architectural design can transform a traditional agricultural structure into a beautiful contemporary family home. Located in a quiet Devon village, The Barton began as a sizeable stone barn set within a rural farmyard - full of potential but in need of reinvention.
DUA Architecture was commissioned to design a comprehensive remodel and conversion, creating a home that celebrates the barn’s rural character while introducing modern design and comfort. The design includes the insertion of an independent timber frame within the existing stone walls to preserve the original structure while improving thermal efficiency. A gallery level and mezzanine connected by a spiral staircase enhance the internal volume, while vaulted ceilings and a large feature chimney create a sense of openness and warmth.
The result is a delightful Devon family home that combines heritage charm with contemporary living, making full use of the building’s natural character and countryside setting.
