Old Barn at Downton

Downton, Hampshire

This barn conversion in Downton, Hampshire, on the edge of the New Forest National Park, is a striking example of how sensitive architectural design can transform an old agricultural structure into a stunning contemporary home. Originally granted outline permission for conversion into a two-storey dwelling, the existing barn’s limited height presented a challenge.

At DUA Architecture, we developed a detailed design that not only overcame this limitation but elevated the entire project - literally and figuratively. By raising the roof and increasing the pitch, we were able to achieve the necessary internal height for two storeys while maintaining the barn’s authentic rural character.

A distinctive feature of the original barn was its radiused connecting walls, which we celebrated in the final design. By inserting an octagonal central space, we created a two-storey galleried entrance hall that showcases the barn’s unique geometry and craftsmanship. The result is a home that blends historic rural charm with contemporary comfort and light-filled living spaces.

Completed years ago, this project continues to stand as a stunning example of barn conversion architecture in Hampshire, perfectly demonstrating how traditional buildings can be reimagined for modern living.
