Thorney Orchard

Holmsley, New Forest

This contemporary new dwelling in the New Forest showcases how modern architecture can sit harmoniously within a protected rural landscape. Designed by DUA Architecture, the home replaces an outdated building with a striking yet sensitive design that celebrates clever design and quality craftsmanship.

Although the New Forest National Park Authority initially refused planning permission on the grounds of “lacking local distinctiveness,” the Planning Inspectorate later overturned the decision - praising the proposal for its design quality and landscape integration. In the Inspector’s words:

“the simple sculptural forms would sit comfortably in the landscape.”
“I find the design is of exceptional quality which would enhance its
setting.”
This project stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful contemporary design in the New Forest, combining modern architectural form with respect for the natural environment.
