Kings Farm
Hordle, Hampshire
Kings Farm, Hordle is a successful example of a farm building converted into start-up units on the edge of the New Forest National Park. DUA Architecture led the adaptive-reuse project to transform an underused cowshed into flexible, thermally efficient workspace for small local businesses.
Securing planning permission in this sensitive countryside location required retaining the original barn’s shape and scale to preserve the rural character. Our design carefully balanced that constraint with the client’s need for new cladding and a refurbished interior - resulting in a planning-compliant scheme that met both conservation and commercial objectives.
Internally the former open barn was subdivided into separate start-up units, each benefiting from a highly insulated roof and plentiful rooflights that flood the workspaces with natural daylight. The upgrade delivered improved thermal performance, comfortable year-round working conditions, and durable finishes suited to small enterprises.
Since completion, the converted building at Kings Farm has hosted numerous businesses and become a valued local community asset, demonstrating how sensitive farm conversions in Hordle and the New Forest area can support economic activity while respecting landscape and heritage.
