Our design for this replacement dwelling in a rural setting is unashamedly contemporary. This is why it was refused planning permission by the New Forest National Park Authority. Their argument was that as such, it lacked ‘local distinctiveness’ and would not sit well in the landscape. Fortunately, the Planning Inspectorate took the opposite viewpoint, praising the scheme from various viewpoints. Here are some extracts from the Inspector’s report:
“ . . . the simple sculptural forms would sit comfortably in the landscape.”
“ . . . I find the design is of exceptional quality which would enhance its setting.”

“It would also reflect current concerns over climate change by minimising energy consumption in use.”
“I acknowledge that the design would not mirror any of the vernacular traditions of the New Forest. However, evidence suggests that there is very little true vernacular in the immediate area. Moreover, through its high quality design in an appropriate location, I consider that the dwelling is a good example of creating distinctiveness in an area with some inappropriate suburban influences.”
